17 Dec Moving to supported living: Victoria’s story

Moving home can be a worrying and unsettling time for anyone, but more so if you are moving from a residential care home to your own tenancy in supported living accommodation.

We recently opened Rock Court, 10 newly refurbished supported living apartments in Mansfield. A number of residents from Jubilee Court in Sutton-in-Ashfield (our specialist service supporting people on the autism spectrum), felt ready to move on to a more independent lifestyle. They became our first tenants at Rock Court.

Victoria gave us her thoughts about moving. She kindly agreed to share them publicly too, so that other people who may be experiencing the same situation know they are not alone and that we all face difficult decisions and thoughts sometimes.

Moving on: Victoria’s Story

Hi all to those who know me and don’t. I am doing something a bit different this time, I’m going to do a blog about my experience of moving into supported living.

In the build up to moving, I had mixed emotions; Will I be ok? Will I be able to handle it? Will I get bored in my own time? These are a few of many of the thoughts I had. Since these are all normal thoughts, staff supported me with all these emotions and visiting helped.

The day I moved, I didn’t actually feel at home until all my stuff was in my flat. I felt in control of being able to pick my own furniture and colour scheme.

After I was here and everything was in, the first night I felt exhausted from the move but surprisingly to myself I felt quite at ease. I knew where staff would be if needed and seeing the familiar faces helped. I was in and ready for a good night sleep.

I am learning with money, what comes in my own home and how to run my own home, which was something that was overwhelming but most of it I am learning to be independent, but I am learning new skills.

I am learning to be content around me.
