LIVING AT SHAFTSBURY

Moving into a new home can be unsettling, so we work closely with families and carers to make this process as smooth as possible. We plan a gradual transition period, with short visits and overnight stays until the individual feels comfortable moving into their new home.

People at Shaftsbury enjoy a varied lifestyle, with a care plan tailored to their personal wishes and aspirations. Individuals have choice in how they structure their days, what they do with their time and where they spend their holidays.

Activities on offer include outings to the seaside, going out for meals, playing pool or attending a football match and drop-in services. Within the home, people like to contribute to the family environment and enjoy their hobbies. Individuals are encouraged to be as independent as possible and can help with everyday tasks, such as hoovering, looking after their own rooms, gardening, cooking and getting the shopping.

Individuals are supported to keep in close contact with family members and friends, and loved ones can visit at any time.

“People’s needs, and wishes were met by staff who knew them well. We saw and were told of many examples of staff going the extra mile to help and support people they cared for. For example, we were told about how the service had supported a person with very complex needs to plan a holiday to visit family. The service told us this action ‘had a massive effect on the person’s positivity and mental wellbeing’.”

OUR TEAM

Our dedicated team has a wealth of experience in supporting people with a variety of disabilities and support needs. All staff are committed to the premise of ‘seeing the person not the condition’ and in promoting the individual’s privacy, rights and dignity. We have a rolling programme of training and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to ensure we are up-to-date with best practices.

“People using the service benefited from an outstanding responsive service. The service was exceptional in placing people at the heart of the service. We saw how staff and management were supportive and went the extra mile to care right for people and were passionate about providing person-centred care to people when needed.”

WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP

Following a person-centred approach is at the heart of what we do at Shaftsbury.

We work hard to ensure that people’s views are heard and acted upon and as part of this we have regular house meetings, a service user forum, plus our dignity and dementia champions (both staff and residents).

Families and friends are encouraged to share their views on how we run our service too.

We work in partnership with other professionals, such as Sun Healthcare’s supported living team and external services, including advocacy, speech and language teams, occupational therapists, psychology and other social and healthcare providers.

PERSONAL STORY

My name is Helen, I was brought up by my foster parents, at sixteen I got my own place in Barnsley but it was hard and I didn’t like it. My social worker found me a place at Shaftsbury and I am given help with the things I struggle with. I have done a few things but my favourite was a weekend away to London and going abroad to Paris and seeing Take That, I want to stay at Shaftsbury because I am happy and it’s my home.
